What is eCourts?

eCourts is software proprietary to the New Jersey Judiciary in support of a paperless solution. The web based application allows electronic filing of documents to the courts as well as provides electronic notifications and case access to the case parties.

New rule 1:32-2A (Effective 9/1/2013) serves to:

Confirm the Judiciary’s intention and authority to develop and implement paperless, electronic court systems

Confirm that the data and documents maintained in an approved electronic court system shall have the same force and effect as if in original paper format

Provide for the use of electronic signatures in an approved electronic court system

What are the features of eCourts?

Judiciary Electronic Filing : A web-based application that allows for electronic filing of documents to the courts

Case Management Processing : Allows for case processing by court staff and chambers staff

Document Management : Maintains an electronic case jacket (e-filed documents and documents scanned or uploaded by court staff)

Who can file using eCourts?

New Jersey attorneys in good standing will be able to file using eCourts. The Attorney ID used for filing should be that of the attorney whose name is directly associated with the filing.

How do I register for eCourts?

Use your 9 digit Attorney ID and password to register and login for eCourts.

Initial Registration page will be displayed.

Verify your firm information and enter email address and certify the same.

What document formats are allowed for eFiling?

Most documents must be in PDF format. Some documents such as proposed order must be in MS Word format.

What cases can filings be submitted for?

eCourts will initially accept filings for Superior Court Criminal cases with an assigned PROMIS/Gavel number.

Filings can only be submitted in counties where eCourts has been implemented.

Filings cannot be submitted for :

Cases not yet in PROMIS/Gavel

Cases transferred or merged into other cases (file in active case, not closed case)

Non-Criminal cases (e.g., gun permits, municipal appeals)

Megan’s law filings and Krol filings are NOT to be submitted via eCourts

What is the rule regarding Redaction related to documents submitted to court?

Per Rule 1:38-7 confidential personal identifiers must be redacted by filer. Documents are immediately available in the Case Jacket upon eFiling and a court order is required to remove filings.

Per Rule 1:38-7 confidential personal identifier is a:

Social Security number

Driver’s license number

Vehicle plate number

Insurance policy number

Active financial account number, or active credit card number

Prohibition on Submission of Confidential Personal Identifiers to the Court:

A party shall not set forth confidential personal identifiers as defined in R. 1:38-7(a) in any document or pleading submitted to the court unless otherwise required by statute, rule, administrative directive, or court order; provided, however, that an active financial account number may be identified by the last four digits when the financial account is the subject of the litigation and cannot otherwise be identified

Will I be notified of a filing?

Yes. You will be notified of any filings that you may have completed using eCourts. An email will be sent to the registered email address within few minutes of a successful eFiling.
